I cannot believe I have only been in Amsterdam for two days and have already walked over 50,000 steps! We have been going nonstop and I have been having so much fun! Here are some highlights from today:
We started the day off with a canal cruise through Amsterdam, which was absolutely beautiful. I learned that Amsterdam actually has more canals than Venice! And I saw so much of the beautiful architecture Amsterdam has to offer.
Next, we went to Bloemenmarkt, a floating flower market on a canal. This was also gorgeous (pictured above). Amsterdam is known for their tulips, so of course I had to buy a few packages to take back home.
Then my group did some souvenir shopping, I stood in a giant wooden shoe (because, why not?), and then we spent the rest of the afternoon going through museums!
First we saw an old canal house built the 17th century, these houses are so skinny and small looking on the outside, but the inside was unexpectedly spacious, not to mention beautiful! Then we saw house of artist Rembrandt van Rijn, where he used to live and where many of his etches are held. The art minor in me thought this was very cool.
To finish our museum tour, we were able to see two beautiful Catholic Churches. First, we visited the Our Lord in the Attic museum. This is an old Catholic Church that was built in to be hidden the attic of three old canal houses back when Catholicism was illegal in the Netherlands. Second, we saw Oude Kerk, or “Old Church”, which is the oldest building in Amsterdam, as well as also giant, beautiful Catholic church. This place was huge!
After exploring the city all day, my group went to The Pancake Bakery for dinner. There, we all split several savory and sweet pancakes, each probably twice the size of my head (no joke). It was a great end to a great day!
